Fewer Demerit Points, Faster Suspensions: Singapore Tightens DIPS From 2027

If you've been treating demerit points as something of a collection game, you'll want to rethink that habit. From 1 January 2027, Singapore's Driver Improvement Points System (DIPS) will become significantly stricter, making it easier for repeat traffic offenders to lose their driving licence.

The biggest change is a lower suspension threshold for non-probationary drivers. Instead of accumulating 24 demerit points within a 24-month period before facing suspension, motorists will now be suspended after reaching just 18 points.

The revised framework also removes the progressively higher thresholds for subsequent suspensions, with the same 18-point limit applying across the board. Repeat offenders can also expect longer suspension periods.

According to the Singapore Police Force, the changes are designed to address a small but persistent group of motorists who continue to commit serious traffic offences despite existing enforcement measures. By tightening the system, the authorities hope to encourage safer driving habits while improving safety for all road users.

For the vast majority of motorists who obey the rules, nothing changes. But for habitual offenders, the margin for error will be considerably smaller. From 2027, it will take fewer offences to lose your licence - a clear reminder that dangerous driving comes with increasingly serious consequences.
