GM used to be the No.1 car manufacturer up until about two years ago, when they were surpassed by their closest rival, Toyota. Toyota reportedly even has enough cash to buy over GM.
If you're GM, at this point in time, no solution seems too incredible. Industry insiders speculate that GM's chief executive and chairman, Rick Wagoner, is seriously considering a trip to Japan to pay a visit to Toyota.
Over there, several issues reportedly on the table for discussion include:
- The possibility of Toyota buying some of GM's assets and;
- Striking a partnership wherein Toyota's hybrid technology is licensed for use in GM cars.
There's even talk of Toyota building sub-compact, ultra fuel-efficient cars for the American carmaker.
While all of these sound like potentially good solutions, it remains to be seen however, if the two giants can work out any deals.
Then again, desperate times call for desperate measures.
