Toyota had to develop and entirely new platform for the iQ model. Developing a new platform will always cost a lot of money, even if you are the wealthiest carmaker in the world. Just how is Toyota going to get the most out of their investment then?

According to industry rumors, Toyota is planning to create a small two-seat roadster, tentatively named the Spider, which will be based on the iQ platform. Expect this baby to be smaller than a Mazda MX-5.

The new roadster will most likely have the same petrol and diesel engine options as the iQ car. If all goes well, Toyota should debut the Spider concept at next year's Tokyo Motor Show.
