Is Your Latio Killing You?

Environmental concerns these days have created such a big fuss. And when you zoom in on the details, it seems that drivers are not only gradually killing the earth when they put their right foot down, but also killing themselves when they inhale many other noxious fumes from inside the car.

Non-profit organisation, The Ecology Center, has published results for the toxicity levels of various cars. Topping the list (from the bottom) is the Nissan Latio, or Versa as it is known in the UK, followed by the Chevrolet Aveo, the Scion xB 5dr and the Kia Rio. Meanwhile, the safest cars to breathe in were the Chevrolet Cobalt, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Honda Odyssey and Volvo’s V50.

The method of testing was by analysis of the elemental composition of various interior parts via a portable X-Ray Florescence (XRF) device. A total of 15 components, including the steering wheel, seats, dashboard and carpets are scanned for any toxic materials used.

These “Chemicals of Concern” consist of elements such as arsenic, bromine, chlorine, chromium, lead, mercury, nickel and tin. They have also been identified by external environment or industry associations and have been placed under regulatory restrictions and/or voluntary limits.

As a simple comparison, while Nissan’s Latio got a High Concern score of 5, BMW’s Z4 3.0 scored a healthy 1.3. The Latio was rated 2.9 for its chlorine hazard while the Z4 received a score of 0.3. It also contained enough lead to be rated 2.8 and the Z4 got a pleasing zero for lead content.

So the next time you get into your car and want to take a deep breath to “admire the scent of your new car”, think again.
