Lamborghini Urus to go into production by 2016

Lamborghini have joined both Bentley and Rolls Royce in the ultra luxury SUV market. Bentley announced recently that they will be putting the Crewe into production. The new SUV will share its platform with the next generation VAG SUVs like the Q7, Touareg and Cayenne. Bentley plans to launch their new SUV by 2016.   In a move to counter Bentley's assault on the ultra luxury SUV market, Rolls Royce has also confirmed plans for a Spirit of Ecstasy SUV according to a Bloomberg report.

Lamborghini CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, recently confirmed that the Italian supercar manufacturer will be putting the Urus into production. The concept SUV was first unveiled at the Beijing Auto show last year to a positive audience.

This isn't the first time the Urus has been mentioned for production and it seems almost certain that Lamborghini will make its foray into the SUV market with it. Lamborghini fans will remember that this isn't the marque's first attempt at an SUV.

In the 1980s, Lamborghini produced the LM002 to compete for the US military contract to replace their aging Willys Jeep. However, the contract was eventually won by AM General with the HUMVEE.

The LM002 was powered by a 5.2-litre V12 from the Lamborghini Countach. The Italian marque ended up selling over 300 LM002s to the public. One of its most famous owners was Uday Hussein, the former Iraqi dictators older son. In July 2004, the US soldiers used Uday's LM002 to simulate the effects of a car bomb.
