Local motorists are increasingly driving more dangerously and committing dangerous driving behaviours, a recent survey of 500 motorists found.

The Road Safety Survey, commissioned by AXA and conducted by the Nielson Company, found three in four motorists admitting that they have ever sped more than 10km/h over the speed limit among other driving infractions. This comes as a marked increase of 12% over the previous year’s results.

This worry is underscored by an increase in number of drivers who regard speeding as only dangerous depending on the driver or situation – a 12% rise.

Beating traffic lights and changing direction without signalling take second and third placing with an increase of eight and five percent respectively.

When asked about the trend identified in the survey, the Chief Executive Officer of AXA Insurance Singapore, Mr. Alain Adicecom said: “The trend is of concern and we want, through this survey, to inform the public about road safety.”

The results of this survey come in the light of an increase in number of motor insurance claims received by AXA Insurance Singapore. Senior manager of Corporate Communications, Ms. Irene Wee revealed that there was a 16% increase for motorcycle claims and 13% in private motor car claims from last year.

However, AXA Insurance Singapore has no intention of raising premiums or reformulating vehicle insurance policies in the short term.

Executive Vice President of Corp. Communications & Strategic Planning, Mr. Stanislas Conseiller said: “This trend is in the short term but we will see if the trend continues in the future.”

“Currently, we are customer oriented and we want to give [our policyholders] the best price.”

On a lighter note, the survey also found that local motorists are increasingly regarding the safety of others and self as the second and third most influential factors in inducing road safety behaviours, up from fourth and fifth position in the 2009 survey.

Mr. Adicecom also added: “Part of AXA’s responsibility as a Singapore leading motor insurer is to work towards raising risk awareness of motorists to prevent accidents.”

AXA Insurance Singapore will also be running a road safety campaign with games and attractive prizes. It will run from 15th July to 15th August on www.axa.com.sg .
