LTA clamps down on errant lorry drivers & owners
The Land Transport Authority has intensified checks on lorries to clamp down on errant lorry drivers who carry excess workers and exceeded the maximum allowable height (1.1 metre) of a seated worker.

Those who failed to display the Maximum Passenger Capacity (MPC) label or ensure that the passenger seats in the lorry's cabin are filled-up before placing their workers on the carriage deck, were also taken to task.
Over a three-day period, from 1-3 September 2009, LTA officers conducted operations at several locations such as Pioneer Road, Benoi Road and Loyang Road. A total of 202 lorry drivers/owners were caught flouting the rules on workers transported on lorries.
"We would like to remind employers and lorry owners that they have a very important role to play in enhancing the safety of workers transported on lorries. They must ensure that, and their drivers, are familiar with the safety rules, and that these rules are complied with before they start their journey."
"LTA has stepped up enforcement to clamp down on lorry drivers and owners who flout these safety regulations. Errant lorry drivers and owners caught will be taken to task and will face tougher penalties. We will work closely with stakeholders to stamp out erroneous practices and improve the safety of the workers," said LTA's Director of Services and Investigations Mr Tan Hiok Seng.
Safety a shared responsibility
Employers and lorry drivers have a responsibility to pro-actively take measures to protect their workers and comply with safety regulations. Lorry drivers need to exercise care for their passengers and observe safe driving habits. Road accidents are preventable if all road users exercise more care, caution and consideration at all times.
To raise awareness among employers and workers on their responsibilities, LTA and the Ministry of Manpower have produced stickers on the safety measures for the transportation of workers.
These materials will be progressively distributed from this month to lorry owners, workers' dormitories and construction sites to be prominently displayed at common areas and on the carriage deck of lorries. Please see Annex A for sample of the sticker.
Members of the public are also encouraged to call LTA's hotline at 1800-CALL LTA (1800-2255 5582) to report any instances of non-compliance spotted on the road.
