A defect that may cause the sudden loss of power steering is singled out as the main cause.

The fault lies with the cooling hose clamp, which is suspected to not be held in place with enough force. This could result in a sudden loss of assistance to the power steering system. If this happens, the power steering pump itself may be damaged as a result.

A sudden loss in steering power could equate to a loss of vehicle control.

Apparently, this is not the first time that this problem has occurred. SUVs which were recalled in 2003 for the same problem are still included in this latest recall - the problem was not properly addressed the first time around.
