It's a range-topping, high-performance version of the new A-class that will be a rival for cars such as the BMW M135i and Audi S3.

Power for the A45 AMG comes from a new turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine that develops 355bhp; Mercedes says it's the most powerful four-cylinder production engine in the world. The Audi S3 and BMW M135i develop 296bhp and 315bhp respectively.

The A45 AMG has a four-wheel drive system that sends power to the front wheels in "normal driving", but can direct up to 50 per cent to the rear wheels, depending on the situation and driver inputs. A seven-speed dual clutch transmission is standard.

Mercedes-Benz quotes a 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h.

The A45 AMG's exhaust system features a control flap that's designed to create more noise when the driver is accelerating hard, but also allow quiet motorway cruising. An AMG performance exhaust that creates an "even more emotional and striking" engine sound is an option.

Compared with other A-class models, the A45 AMG gets upgraded, stiffer suspension and bespoke steering settings.

Cosmetic tweaks include a "twin blade" front grille, black air intake surrounds, AMG alloy wheels and square exhaust tailpipes.
The interior gains Artico (artificial leather) seat trim, a carbon-fibre-effect dashboard covering, red seat belts and an AMG instrument cluster.
