120 Years On, The Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Still Sets The Standard
From record-breaking runs to royal engagements, the Silver Ghost helped shape the marque's reputation.

Rolls-Royce is marking the 120th anniversary of the Silver Ghost, the 40/50 H.P. model that helped establish the brand’s reputation for quality and dependability.

Introduced at London’s Olympia Motor Show in 1906, the six-cylinder car earned its reputation through endurance challenges and competition victories, including the Spanish Grand Prix.

Among its most famous examples is chassis 1701, which tackled the 1911 London-Edinburgh Trial with its gearbox fixed in top gear. It returned over 24 mpg during the run and later achieved 101.8 mph, making it the first Rolls-Royce to break the 100-mph barrier.

Its admirers included Winston Churchill and opera star Nellie Melba. The car also played a role in the origins of the Spirit of Ecstasy mascot in 1911.

British production totalled 6,173 cars before ending in 1925. Today, chassis 1701 is displayed at Goodwood, where Rolls-Royce continues to uphold the standards established by its famous predecessor.
