Speculation began almost as soon as Massa's accident occurred: who is going to fill his race seat?

With two test drivers, the immediate talk was that one of them would be asked to step in for Felipe. But there were whispers too, that 7-time Formula One champ Michael Schumacher would be the Italian team's choice.

Felipe Massa is reportedly doing well post-op, but his injuries will undoubtedly leave him unable to race for the remainder of the season.

So with seven races left in the season, Ferrari decided to give the seat to Michael Schumacher, who is currently an adviser to the team.

A Ferrari statement read: "Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro intends to put Michael Schumacher in Felipe Massa's car until the Brazilian driver will be able to race again."

"Michael Schumacher said he is ready and, over the next few days, will undertake a specific training programme at the end of which confirmation will be given of his participation in the Championship with effect from the European Grand Prix on the 23rd of August."
