Volkswagen plans to debut a mid-engine concept at the LA Auto Show, and an Audi R3 derivative that could replace the TT is reportedly being considered. Now that Porsche has upped its stake in VAG, it was just a matter of time before rumours of sharing this mid-engine platform between VW, Audi and Porsche began to surface.

Speculation is rife that Porsche is planning to use the mid-engined concept to revive its 356 model - as a baby Boxster. To retain its exclusivity factor, the model will be produced in small numbers.

Engine options are expected to range from 1.2 - 2.0 litre turbocharged units, with estimated outputs between 105-280hp.

If these plans turn out to be true, then competition in the small roadster segment will definitely heat up.
