Road Safety Month launched in bid to reduce road accidents
The number of accidents involving heavy vehicles which resulted in injury or death has dipped to 232 cases last year as compared to 237 in 2011. This statistics was revealed by the Traffic Police. However, celebrating the good progress will be a little premature, as in the first 3 months of 2013 alone, there has been at least 10 cases of such accidents occuring. To prevent the number from rising any further, the government has put in place a few measures, starting with the Singapore Road Safety Month, which will be launched on the 6th of May 2013. This programme aims to better educate motorists on road safety. The event will mainly target the vulnerable, such as young children, the elderly and the motorcyclists, and owners of heavy vehicle fleets.
As a deterance, the Traffic Police conducts regular patrols in areas with heavy heavy vehicle traffic such as Tuas, Punggol and Changi. They have issued over 50 summonses to heavy vehicle related traffic violations during a 3 ½ hour stint in Tuas last week. Additionally, the offenders will be given pamphlets to remind them of the importance of road safety.
Although the total number of summonses issued for moving offences in heavy vehicles has risen to 4,441 last year, speeding summonses fell to 100 from 1,182 in 2011. The number of drivers not wearing their seat belts has also fallen to 760 last year from 775 in 2011.
