SG: Cat A cars may be reclassified as Cat B models

New COE regulations, which will come into effect by October 2014, will only allow cars that have 1,600cc engines or less and have less than 130bhp classifiable as Cat A. So far, several models under the revised COE structure tested have exceeded the allowable power cap, which may see them being bumped up into Cat B. This isn’t surprising though; manufacturers often under declare the outputs of their cars to ensure they don’t get complaints. LTA has made it clear that they will be strict on classifying the cars. New models will now be strapped to chassis dynos to test the power output claimed by the automaker. The extensive testing would increase the homologation period from an average of 4 weeks to 4 months.
