SG: Debut of The New Volkswagen Polo

Making  its debut is a Volkswagen Polo that has been advanced both visually and technically. The assistance and infotainment systems, as well as the new generation engine of the Polo, have now taken enormous strides forward. The Polo is the car with the most advanced range of integrated features. It  is also one of the world’s best-selling compact models with nearly 14 million units produced to date. Last year alone, around 721,000 drivers opted for a Polo.  The designers have strikingly advanced especially the front and rear end, with the newly designed headlights and tail lights being especially distinctive. The front end now has a much more 3D and sporty look due to its redesigned bumper and larger lower air intake. Acting as a design detail providing structure, a new chrome trim connects the two fog lights and makes the Polo appear wider; at the same time, the visual focus is lowered by the trim.

The interior features many new ergonomic and visual improvements. Aside from the new three-spoke steering wheel, the new instrument cluster in 3-D ‘tubes‘ look catches the eye immediately. The instruments in typical Volkswagen design language are finely detailed and are very precisely implemented.

The radio system is also new; as a second generation system, it reflects state-of-the-art technology in what is known as the modular infotainment system (MIB). That is, the software and hardware of this system follows the infotainment world of the larger Golf. Apart from offering full control of all music and car-related settings on its 5-inch touch screen, the ‘Composition Color’ system includes AUX-IN and SD card interfaces plus a total of six speakers. There is also an innovative driving style analyzer mode that actively monitors the driver’s behavior and makes suggestions on how to drive more economically.

With the new 1.2 TSI engine with double overhead camshafts and 16 valves, as well as standard BlueMotion Technology, Volkswagen realized a fuel economy improvement of over 11 percent compared to the previous Polo 1.2 TSI. The Stop/Start system and regenerative braking are new to the Polo and enable it to consume just 4.7 liters of petrol per 100 km. Turbo charging boosts the engine’s torque to 160 Nm (over the range 1,400 to 3,500 rpm). And that is clearly experienced as a gain in agile performance. The 90 PS Polo 1.2 TSI has a top speed of 184 km/h and accelerates to 100 km/h in only 10.8 seconds.

A newly developed electro-mechanical steering system is making its debut in the Polo. The compact system is integrated directly into the steering column. The new Polo steering system is distinguished by its very precise and agile response and steering properties and it decouples roadway bumps very well. The system is operated with a steering gear (worm gear) that is driven by an electric motor.

Many new features make living with the Polo a real pleasure. These include front cornering lights that come on automatically when turning, electric folding of the door mirrors when locking the car, a full-featured trip computer, multi-function steering wheel, two-level boot floor and more. The new Polo will be officially introduced in Singapore today.
