SG: Plans to convert Waterloo Street to pedestrian-only street fraught with opposition.

Businesses in areas such as Club Street and Ann Siang Road have benefited from being located in a pedestrian-only street. There are plans to convert Waterloo Street into a pedestrian-only street as well, although that plan has met with some opposition. One main concern for the residents of Bugis is the fact that any sound made is echoed and amplified due to the close proximity of the buildings. With the increase in human traffic flow round the clock as a result of the conversion, the noise pollution may affect the elderly living in the flats nearby. Waterloo Street is the only place in Singapore where you can find food, a host of religious worship sites, and art galleries within walking distance of one another. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul and Sri Krishnan Temple, both of which were founded in 1870, along with the 135-year old Maghain Aboth Synagogue, are situated close to modern arts facilities such as Dance Ensemble Singapore and Sculpture Square.Pictures used for illustration only.
