35 year old Malaysian worker Lee Heong Chye has been arrested and sentenced to 4.5 years in jail, with 12 strokes of the cane for robbing 33 year old Chung Yi Ren’s cash and property, valued at $2,251, at knifepoint. He has also been banned from driving for 5 years. Robbery wasn’t the only crime Lee committed. He pleaded guilty to using morphine and possessing heroin.He was cash strapped at the time of the robbery, and wasn’t arrested till 3 days later at Royal Plaza on Scotts, not for robbery initially, but on suspicion of drug consumption. He could have been sentenced for up to 10 years and at least six strokes of the cane for the robbery, and could face an extra 10 years' jail and a $20,000 fine for using and possessing drugs. 5 feeder services operated by private companies will supplement exisiting public bus routes. So far, the three private operators have been running feeder services in Ang Mo Kio, Bedok, Boon Lay and Woodlands, and the next batch of contracts will see them expanding to areas such as Choa Chu Kang, Pasir Ris and Tampines.The new services will run at least 5 times per hour during peak hours to complement exsiting services. Illegal parking is an issue that gripes most countries. Every nation deals with the problem differently, some taking more drastic measures to deter potential offenders. In the little red dot we call home, the LTA has decided that CCTVs will be a good way to deter the offenders. They will activate CCTV cameras at 10 locations, before proceeding to install 20 more in other locations, all of which should be functional by end 2014. The 30 locations have been selected for they have a high incidence of illegal parking which impedes the smooth movement of public buses. The CCTVs will be operational 24 hours daily, and prominent signs will be put up in the monitoring zones to remind motorists against parking illegally.   Pictures used for illustration purposes only.
