SG: SIM student sentenced to 2 weeks jail for assaulting cabbie
24 year old SIM Student Tan Jian Liang has been sentenced to a 2 week jail sentence following his actions on the 17th of January. The university student boarded a cab at Boat Quay at 1:40 am that day, and asked the cabbie to drive him to Choa Chu Kang Crescent. The cabbie, Mr. Seah, arrived at the destination and asked Tan for the block number but received no reply, for Tan was asleep. Seah got out of the cab and tapped Tan on the shoulder to wake him. Tan asked Seah to drive straight on, before heading straight back to sleep. Mr. Seah tapped him again to ask for his residential address. Tan got aggressive and shouted a “Do you want to fight?", before getting out of the cab, chasing the taxi driver, before pushing him to the ground, sitting on his stomach and repeatedly punching the cabby in the face. The assault was stopped by police on anti-crime patrol. Mr. Seah was given a 3 day MC to recover from his minor injuries. Tan pleaded guilty for hurting Mr Seah along the roads leading to Block 667 Choa Chu Kang Crescent. A second charge for mischief was taken into consideration, after it was revealed that Tan broke a Nets device after throwing it. Tan paid $336 for the damage, on top of the $515 paid to Mr Seah to cover his medical fees and loss of income. Tan is now out on $6,000 bail, and is scheduled to start serving his sentence from the 5th of May. For his actions he could have been jailed for up to two years or fined up to $5,000 or both.
