SG: Subaru Challenge Suspended as Thunderstorm Broke out on Third Day
On the third day, the Challenge was suspended for 66 minutes during the thunderstorm that occurred at the 50 hour mark yesterday. This is the second time in the Challenge's 12 year history. For the remaining contestants this was a relief as they were allowed to move away from the cars to take shelter within the vicinity of Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza. The event grounds were not safe for the contestants to be left outdoors as the event organizers annouced that category 1 lightning made the area unsafe. However contestants were still required to observe the other rules of the game and were not allowed to eat, sleep not sit down to rest.
This was the longest interruption throughout the history of the Challenge. The first time a similar scenario occurred was in 2008, when contestants were allowed to take shelter for 46 minutes on the second day as thunderstorm occurred.
The rain did not break the spirits of hundreds of supporters as they continued to camp around the perimeter of the arena to show additional support and words of encouragement.
After confirming that it was safe, event organizers resumed the Challenge at 5.40pm. Contestants were instructed to return to the arena at as they looked forward to the six-hourly break at 7.00pm. Past the 55-hour mark of the challenge, 32 contestants remain – 20 local and 12 regional – as they battled it out into the third night of the Challenge.
"The last time we had to stop the competition due to severe weather conditions was in 2008, when we saw a new record broken. Seeing the resilience of the contestants this year, combined with the suspension of the Challenge this afternoon, we might just see the current longest record broken,” said Mr. Glenn Tan, Executive Director, Tan Chong International Ltd.
