SINGAPORE FORMULA 1 GP GOOD TO GO!

Singapore will acquire the rights to the Formula One Grand Prix from the 2008 Season onwards for a period of 5 years. The unprecedented move, after nearly a year’s worth of discussion, was made by the Singapore Tourism Board, property tycoon Mr. Ong Beng Seng and the Boss of Formula One himself, Bernie Ecclestone.

This event marks the first Formula One street race in the region, and possibly the first night time grand prix in Formula One history.

This deal follows Singapore’s success in acquiring rights to host a Grand Prix race annually for five years beginning 2008, with of course a renewable option.

Mr Ecclestone said: “I am very pleased to welcome Singapore to the Formula One family and we look forward to this exotic addition to the Championship”

“This will be the first fully lit street race in Formula One and as a night race we anticipate it will quickly establish itself as one of the most dramatic and atmospheric races on our calendar.”

“We have experienced first-hand the pleasure of doing business in Singapore and appreciate the considerable reputation it has established as a leading destination for big international business.”

“This is an important aspect in the delivery of Singapore’s global vision, and they deserve great credit for getting the job done.”

“I know the Formula One drivers, teams and fans are all looking forward to coming to Singapore next year.”

The Singapore Grand Prix will be managed by Singapore GP Pte Ltd, which is a newly incorporated race promotion company formed between Komoco Motors and regional events company Lushington Entertainments, via its parent company Reef Enterprises.

Singapore GP Pte Ltd will work closely with the Singapore Tourism Board and the Singapore Motor Sports Association.

Mr Ecclestone also added in the question and answer session, that the deal would not have been possible without the help and the existence of Mr. Ong, a close friend of Mr. Ecclestone.

“We are delighted to have reached a deal to bring this landmark event to Singapore, and look forward to working with F1, the Singapore Tourism Board and the business community to deliver a great race and vibrant support events together with the very best of Singapore’s famed hospitality and cuisine” Mr Ong added.

The scheduling of the event in the September/October window places the Singapore race in the exciting last quarter of the championships, ensuring maximum interest from the global Formula One community.

In addition, the timing of the night time event will ensure that the Singapore GP can be televised live worldwide, especially in European countries, where their fans remain the traditional core audience of the Formula One Grand Prix.

The street circuit will include powerful lighting systems that will replicate daylight conditions. Safety protocols are very stringent, and are sanctioned by the FIA. This schedule is still subject to final safety clearances.

It will be an estimated 5,260m long, while the track width runs from 10m-14m.

Grandstand accommodation and hospitality areas along the track will be able to house more than 80,000 spectators. A permanent pit area with deluxe paddock facilities will be built adjacent to the Singapore Flyer complex.

Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Singapore, Mr. S Iswaran said: “Singapore is pleased to host the F1 Grand Prix beginning next year. The addition of an international race like F1 will add vibrancy and buzz to Singapore’s leisure and sporting scene. The street circuit will showcase Singapore’s city skyline to international audiences.
