Together with the other Subaru models already awarded the prestigious top rating- namely the Impreza, Forester and Tribeca, Subaru has become the only manufacturer with 2009 IIHS Top Safety Picks for its current entire fleet of vehicles.

The American IIHS "Top Safety Picks" recognizes vehicles at the head of the class for safety, helping consumers distinguish the best overall choices. The award aims to drive continued safety improvements in the industry such as top crash test ratings and the rapid adoption of electronic stability control.

Criteria for consideration as a Top Safety Pick are therefore stringent, where qualification rests on the vehicle’s ability to earn the highest rating in the Institute's battery of front, side and rear tests . Vehicles must also be equipped with electronic stability control- a standard on the entire range of the 2010 Legacy (Vehicle Dynamics Control for Subaru).

Subaru also proved its top-level-safety globally by achieving a top 5-star rating with the new Legacy in esteemed European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). Adding to that, the new Legacy range has also been awarded the top 5-star rating for occupant safety in the latest round of crashworthiness testing by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

"With our long-standing internationally acclaimed record for safety, our customers have come to know and expect from us only the best," Mr Glenn Tan, Group Chief Executive of Motor Image Enterprises said.

"Regular endorsements from reputable automobile bodies around the world bears testament to our aim to provide our drivers with the ultimate driving experience and the peace of mind that they and their loved ones are well-protected from harm.”

Subaru’s flat boxer engines are designed to go under, rather than into the passenger cabin in heavy frontal impacts. Every Subaru also has Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, for optimum grip in all conditions. Every Subaru also has a ring shaped reinforced safety cell, which forms an integral part of the passenger cabin structure. This is basically an interlinked series of metal frames, reinforced at strategic points that minimise cabin distortion in heavy impacts.
