Volkswagen Golf GTI EDITION 50 Rewrites Front-Wheel-Drive Record Books
Anniversary model with 239 kW (325 PS) is the most powerful and dynamically precise production Golf GTI.

Volkswagen’s Golf GTI EDITION 50 has officially become the fastest front-wheel-drive production vehicle to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife, clocking a blistering 7:44.523-minute run around the 20.8km circuit. Driven by VW development and racing driver Benjamin Leuchter, the anniversary model now stands as the quickest production VW ever to tackle the legendary track.

Packing 239kW (325PS), the GTI EDITION 50 sprints from 0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds before topping out at 270km/h. Underneath, it features a MacPherson front suspension setup paired with a four-link rear axle, alongside standard DCC adaptive chassis control and a ride height lowered by 15mm compared to a regular Golf.
The Nürburgring record car was also equipped with the optional GTI Performance package, which sharpens things further with an additional 5mm drop in ride height, lightweight titanium R-Performance exhaust, 19-inch forged alloy wheels and Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres.
The EDITION 50 marks five decades of the GTI badge, which first appeared in 1976 and has since become one of Volkswagen’s most recognisable performance nameplates. More than 2.5 million GTI models have been produced globally, with the latest anniversary edition combining classic GTI traits - punchy performance, front-wheel-drive agility and everyday practicality - with the brand’s latest chassis and drivetrain technology.
