VW unveils new TSI engine and 7-speed DSG at Vienna Engine Symposium
Volkswagen has introduced their latest four-cylinder TSI engine at the Vienna Engine Symposium this week. The tiny 1.4-litre block is the latest addition to VW’s TSI range, which already has the 138 hp and 168 hp versions. While the series’ original design saw these power plants fitted with a turbocharger and a supercharger, this new motor will lose its supercharger, while keeping the former, but will still carry the TSI badging.

While still utilizing the direct injection technology, it will produce 122 hp and 200 Nm of very usable torque from just 1,500 rpm. Even though power figures have gone up, fuel consumption is expected to decrease, thanks to its new seven-speed DSG.
In comparison to the current 1.6 litre FSI engine, the new, smaller 1.4 litre TSI will produce 7 percent more power, 30 percent more torque and yet burns 6 percent less gas.
Engineers have modified the marvelous dual clutch gearbox to make improvements over fuel economy. The clutches are no longer in an oil bath and as a result, VW says that it will aid efficiency. The gearbox is also now good for 250 Nm, and when coupled with the new 1.4 TSI, is said to return average consumption figures of only 5.9 litres/100km.
The new engine and transmission will first be featured in Volkswagen’s Polo hatch in the second half of this year.
