We Clock 600km in the VW Golf GT

We brought the Volkswagen Golf GT up to KL last weekend for the ever so popular Super GT and Formula BMW/Renault V6 race. Naturally, it was supposed to be a fuel mileage test for the little Golf, but instead, we ended up gunning it...

Filling the GT's tank up (without additional top ups after the fuel pump "clicked" to a stop) with Shell's RON97 petrol across the border (Johor Baru) returned us with an indicated "600km to empty" reading on the trip meter.

This was measured based on our current fuel average and driving style.

The car averaged 8.2 l/100km to our destination (Sepang International Circuit) in just under 2 hours, thanks to a highway devoid of heavy traffic and a constant speed of 150-160km/h.

Although we would advise caution when it comes to personal safety and breaching the speed limits, the trip up north gave us the opportunity to test the car's top speed.

The occasional "burst" of power saw 220km/h on an empty stretch, and the magnificent torque spread meant overtaking was an absolute breeze.

The Golf GT cruises comfortably with cars of a larger class, for example, the 2.4 litre Toyota Camry and the BMW 325i

The following two days were a grueling test of urban economy for the GT as we found ourselves being constantly stuck in traffic jams to and from Sepang, typical of the Kuala Lumpur region.

The final results yielded an impressive 579.2km travelled with just 30km left on the trip meter, giving us a calculated total range (city and highway) of just under 610km for the Golf GT.

Not that great, you might say? Keep in mind our rather fast highway cruising speeds and extended stop-go city traffic situations, and you will understand why we're impressed.
