Bad timing for Citroen when the car market in China is booming. The advert (see below) was featured in a full page spread in the Spanish newspaper, El Pais. The advert clearly shows Chairman Mao Zedong pulling a look of disapproval at the Citroen C4 VTS with the accompanying text - “It’s true, we are leaders, but at Citroen the revolution never stops,”

The response to the advertisement was fast and furious as it spreads across the internet from Chinese residents in Spain to China, where Chinese anger was vented openly on various internet mediums.

Citroen was quick to issue an apology with regards to the advertisement and reiterates Citroen's friendship and respect towards the Chinese.

What a marketing blunder!
