Ford's New Marvelous Mondeo

Ford's New Marvelous Mondeo

When the Ford Iosis concept was showcased in 2005, its stunning lines and striking cues drew much positive attention. Supposed to be how the next Ford Mondeo would look like, we knew better than to expect quad gull-wing doors and gorgeous chromed rims on a road-going family saloon. Fortunately for us, the real deal is about to be released for sale – and things don't seem too bad.

Styling

The new Mondeo's interior shows some pretty neat styling, nothing too cluttered up or excessive, while maintaining that tad-bit of futuristic look, thanks to its attention to surface quality and choices of materials. The instrument cluster even has an LCD panel that appears to function as some sort of iDrive, displaying vehicle messages and entertainment options. Of course, don't expect to get to watch your favourite DVD while on the go.

On the outside, its frontal appearance, an expression of Ford's “kinetic design”, bears air intakes like a huge gaping mouth, while its headlamps are aggressive and exhibit sharp angles. Rear lamps, however, bear resemblance to the Saab 9-3 Cabriolet's. Not a bad thing though, as the overall package exudes a feel close to its European contemporaries.

Cool Bits

New bits of technology found here, centering on driver-assistance, include keyless entry and a “Ford Power” start button, a Human Machine Interface (HMI) display, Adaptive Cruise Control with Forward Alert, Interactive Vehicle Dynamics Control with Hill Launch Assist, and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.

Also, a first in Ford's production series, the Mondeo will include the award-winning Easyfuel system. Probably irrelevant in Singapore, as most petrol and diesel pumps are well-separated at the stations, this system will prevent anyone from accidentally refilling with the wrong type of fuel, thanks to the company's ingenuity of engineering its fuel filler necks to allow only the correct type of fuel nozzle to enter the filler neck.

Improved Driving Quality

Major modifications, including a wider track, optimised front suspension design, new rear suspension design, isolated rear subframe and an optimised steering system will contribute to an even more enjoyable ride.

Even noise levels inside the vehicle have been reduced by 3dB. Ford claims that the Mondeo has the lowest levels of wind noise, compared to other cars of its class, when they measured it in their aero-acoustic wind tunnel.
