What hybrid system is the new BMW M5 using?

The new BMW M5's M HYBRID drive system pairs a 4.4-litre V8 engine with an electric motor. The V8 engine, equipped with M TwinPower Turbo technology and a cross-bank exhaust manifold, generates 585hp and 750Nm of torque. The electric motor, integrated into the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, produces 197hp and with a pre-gearing stage, boosts its effective torque to 450Nm. It’s devastatingly powerful on the boil - 727hp and 1,000Nm are figures not to be taken lightly, even in this all-electric age.

Can the new BMW M5 operate in all-electric mode?

Yes, in all-electric mode, the M5 can reach speeds of up to 140km/h. Its 18.6kWh high-voltage battery offers a range of 67-69km (WLTP). The car supports AC charging at up to 7.4kW.

Is the new BMW M5 rear wheel drive?

The new BMW M5's power is delivered through the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system with a rear-biased setup, especially in 4WD Sport mode. Drivers can also select 2WD mode for rear-wheel drive with DSC off.. The M xDrive system and Active M Differential are tailored for the M HYBRID drive system's performance.

What has been done to improve the new BMW M5’s handling?

The new BMW M5's chassis includes a double-wishbone front axle, a five-link rear axle and specially tuned components. Its electrically assisted steering with M Servotronic and variable ratio is rigidly connected to the front axle subframe for optimal road feedback. With wide tracks and high torsional rigidity, this design ensures BMW M's signature agile and precise handling.

How customisable are the BMW M5’s driving modes?

The centre console of the new BMW M5 features a model-specific array of buttons for tailoring the driving experience. The Setup button allows direct adjustment of the drive system, Drivelogic, chassis, steering, braking system, M xDrive and brake energy recuperation settings. Two vehicle setups can be stored and selected using the M buttons on the steering wheel. Launch Control is available in all M Setup menu settings except when the M xDrive system is in 2WD mode.

What’s on the options list of the BMW M5?

Options for the new BMW M5 include the M Carbon exterior package, Alcantara headliner, heated steering wheel, active seat ventilation and a trailer tow hitch. At launch, model-specific BMW M Performance Parts will also be offered, featuring forged light-alloy wheels and carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) exterior components.
