Maserati Previews its Grecale SUV, All-Electric Version to Follow
Another luxury brand, another SUV. This time it’s the Maserati Grecale, a miniaturised Levante of sorts.
Except it isn’t compromised much, if at all, in terms of interior space even though it is meant to be smaller and cheaper. At the preview in Singapore this week, we felt there was plenty of space at the fore and aft when we sat inside the Trofeo version, perhaps a benefit of its long 2,901 mm wheelbase. The boot is suitably big, too, and has a flat loading floor.
The car has its characteristic Maserati cues, but one design feature does stand out - its front end. Its headlights are more cute than menacing, while the grille seems stretched vertically a tad too far. But the rest of the car is svelte.
Launching in 3 versions, The GT kicks off the range with a 4-cylinder mild hybrid 300 hp / 450 Nm engine, while the Modena uses a similar uprated engine with 330 hp / 450 Nm. The Trofeo stands out with its 530 hp / 620 Nm V6. All will come with the slick Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) touchscreen, a digital clock, a Maserati-developed Vehicle Dynamic Control Module (VDCM) and a near button-free interior. MIA now feels brand-appropriate and well integrated into the interior aesthetics, a huge improvement over what we encountered in the Levante GT.
But the biggest change that comes with the Grecale is the 4th Folgore version which will come in a year’s time. The Folgore will be the first fully-electric Maserati with a 105 kWh battery using 400V technology, and promises up to 800 Nm of tree-felling torque. It will also wear a unique Rame Folgore colour which will ‘evolve’ with light. However, Maserati is keeping mum about pricing and positioning of the Folgore even when pressed during a live Q&A session with the experts from Italy, so we will have to wait for more details. I guess it wants to sell as many ICE Grecales as it can before introducing the Folgore, the former available as early as the 2nd half of this year.
The Grecale is going to be a game changer for Maserati, making the desirable brand ever more accessible and finally allowing fans to buy a BEV Maserati. We’re excited about the trident’s future and happy that it looks more secure than ever.
