McLaren’s £500m Future Includes Engines, Factories And An SUV

McLaren is putting £500m into its UK operations, with the investment set to reshape how the British performance car maker designs, engineers and builds its future cars.

The programme will expand McLaren’s manufacturing and engineering capabilities across Britain, adding production capacity as the company prepares for its next generation of models.

Perhaps the biggest technical shift is happening under the bonnet. McLaren will design and manufacture its own engines and transmissions in the UK for the first time.

Two new engines and transmissions are planned as part of the company's future hybrid powertrain programme.

But the unexpected addition (or not!) is higher off the ground: McLaren is developing a performance SUV.

A new UK vehicle assembly facility will provide additional capacity for the SUV and other future models, alongside expanded operations at McLaren’s existing facilities.

The investment will cover everything from vehicle development and testing to manufacturing and carbonfibre production, linking more of McLaren’s operations under one expanded UK manufacturing network.

There will be a jobs boost, too. McLaren expects the programme to create at least 1,000 direct and indirect UK jobs by 2032, while its manufacturing workforce is set to double. New apprenticeship opportunities are also planned. McLaren estimates its wider supply chain could support up to another 3,000 jobs.

So, while the company remains firmly rooted in its supercar heritage, its next phase looks considerably broader: new factories, home-grown engines, hybrid technology and, eventually, a McLaren SUV.
