New Models: Bigger, better Punto

Fiat has pulled the wraps off the new Punto, which will go on sale in the UK early 2006. Styled by Giugiaro and offered in three and five-door body styles, the all new Punto is larger than the outgoing car and is aiming for best-in-class cabin space.

In fact, Fiat is calling the new car Grande Punto, a tactic that reflects the company's intention to produce the current Punto alongside the new car for an indefinite period. It'll be Fiat's bargain basement, entry-level model.

The new Punto will share its platform with the next Vauxhall Corsa. Engines are 1.2, 1.6 and 1.8 petrol units, with a hot turbocharged 1.6 (180bhp) in Sporting versions; diesels are 1.3 (70bhp and 90bhp) and 1.9 (105bhp and 120bhp) Multijet units. All of the new Punto's engines are Euro IV compliant. And in keeping with the current trend, expect a Coupe Cabriolet model later in the product cycle.

This is a crucial car for Fiat, as the company looks to re-establish a firmer foothold in the European high-volume market. Fiat is also making claims for significant improvements in quality, as well as higher levels of safety. Our first hands-on look at new Punto will be at September's Frankfurt Motor Show.
