SG: Driving instructor killed after tree falls on his car

Jason Cheong, a 25-year old driving instructor, was killed last Saturday afternoon when a tree fell on his car. The tree had been uprooted by the strong winds and rain. He was killed on the spot, but fortunately, his 34-year old driver learner, Marliana Sumarno, survived. She escaped with cuts her right shoulder and back pains. The SCDF received a call for help at around 4:23pm on Saturday. The crew used and hydraulic rescue tools cut open the wreck to free Jason and Marliana. It was raining heavily with lightning and thunder during the time of the accident. Marliana was sent to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital to be treated for her injuries, while Jason was pronounced dead on scene by paramedics. His parents and girlfriend broke down in tears when they arrived at the scene of the accident.

The fallen tree stretched across more than two lanes of the road. It’s fallen branches blocked traffic from both directions. The recent spate of heavy rains will mean that it's not the first time this has happened, or will happen. Earlier this month, 2 cars were crushed when a tree fell on them in a cemetry.
