SG: Man jailed for causing hurt

52 year old Govindasamy Lakshmanan has been sentenced to a 3 month jail sentence after pleading guilty to causing hurt to a female ticket inspector. The incident occurred onboard an SMRT bus while he was attempting to defend his sons. The Prosecutors found out that Lakshmanan carried a 10cm long penknife around Serangoon Road even if he had no legal reason to do so. He and his 2 sons, 22 year old Rubenkumar Lakshmanan and 25 year old Sathya Kumar Lakshmanan, along with 2 of Rubenkumar’s friends, then planned to rob a Bangladeshi National carrying a laptop bag on the 17th of November last year. The 5 men proceeded to follow the Bangladeshi, punch him, and grabbed his bag.   Rubenkumar took the bag and fled to Tekka market, pursued by 2 relatives of the Bangladeshi. He proceeded to board service 67, but the relatives tried to pull him out. Lakshmanan used his knife to threathen the relatives to release his son, but ended up accidently slashing the lower back of Ticket Inspector Lim Chow Chen, causing a 5cm long cut. For his actions, he could have been sentenced to a 1 year jail sentence or fined up to $5000, and he also risked an extra 2 years for possession of a knife.Pictures used for illustration purposes only.
