As one of Britain's largest car buying guides, the What Car? awards are a fixture in the calendars of all connected with the automotive industry and following its introduction in 2008, the Security award in association with Thatcham has become a hotly contested category.

The basis for the award is Thatcham's New Vehicle Security Assessment, a comprehensive assessment of a vehicle's security levels and therefore resistance to theft. As the motor insurers' research centre, Thatcham's world renowned vehicle security team provide the results of these assessments to insurers to form an important consideration for group rating.

Mike Briggs, Vehicle Security Manager at Thatcham, said, "As second time winners in this fairly new category, Audi are to be heartily congratulated, not only for the Audi A8 which has received the individual highest score in our assessments, but for their range as a whole which demonstrates that high levels of security are achievable even on the entry level models."

Jon Zammett, Head of Public Relations at Audi said, "We are delighted that the excellent security credentials of the Audi range have yet again been recognised by both What Car? and Thatcham. Sustained investment and a technical development focus on security is keeping Audi ahead of the opposition, as well as the thieves. It's gratifying to know that Audi is deemed by independent experts to offer its customers the very best possible protection for their cars and their possessions."

Waiting in the wings for this category are Mazda, Volkswagen and Volvo who have all achieved excellent results in the latest assessments.

The most secure cars in each class will be announced at the comprehensive British Insurance Car Security Awards event to be held at Thatcham on the 17th June.
