EDITOR'S PICKS - D Segment Gems
What exactly are your A, B, C, D, E-segment cars? In automotive lingo, these various segments refer to the length of the car and the D segment describe cars that have seat room for five adults and have an average length of 4.6 to 4.8 metres. In this editor’s picks, we’ll cover the D Segment Gems, which are your slightly larger than compact sized executive cars without the executive prices. Oh, and the packing (space on the inside) of these few cars may just surprise you!
The Volkswagen Passat has been around for a long, long time and has become a staple for many decades as fleet cars, family cars, and even police vehicles in China. Since 1972, this oldie has gotten better with generations and has developed variants like the Passat 2.0TSI.
Initially a boxy-looking vehicle, it has now become a smooth and sophisticated looker with classic side indents, discreet rear LED lights, and beautifully integrated LED front light housings that provide the front a smart and purposeful low-line look.
This D-segment 1.8 gem delivers executive car comfort and quality, without the executive price while the 2.0 delivers lovely performance with 350Nm torque and does the century sprint at a mind-blowing 6.7 seconds, just 0.2 seconds shy of the iconic Golf GTi.
Even with these larger cars, the handling is so nimble such that it easily eat up tight corners. The 2.0 R-Line comes equipped with paddle shifters right behind the wheel so that you can manually switch gears of its 6-speed DSG transmission.
The interior of the Passat clearly demonstrates the benefits of owning a compact executive sedan as high quality materials are used all around, giving the driver and his passengers a feel-good factor without the high price; definitely a gem!
All in all, these four vehicles are great executive quality work horses. Toyota clearly stands out for the Japanese car lovers and it is certainly a close fight for the continental Skoda Superb, Audi A4, and the Volkswagen Passat. While Audi A4 may lead in terms of its interior quality, the Passat edges ahead when it comes to practicality. The boot of the Passat offers an impressive 586 litres of space, an entire 81 litres more than what the A4 offers. But… the Superb comes out top in terms of boot space with an outstanding 625 litres. Certainly, there are reasons for drivers to choose the Audi A4 because of its prestigious branding or the Passat for its long-standing practicality, but the price of the Skoda Superb, together with its plethora of abilities, is indeed a very good D segment gem!
