Bridgestone Potenza RE050

Bridgestone Potenza RE050

The RE050s have been in the market for a while now. With this long term review, CK brings these tyres, normally found on upmarket vehicles, round for, well, many whirls.

Needless to say, the high-grip compound of the RE050 features Bridgestone’s exclusive AQ DONUT II technology, promising drivers consistently good dry and wet performance throughout the lifespan of the tyres. On the inside, reinforced twin steel belts provide stability to the contact patch, enhancing traction and handling.

The directional tread pattern of the RE050 has a continuous centre rib and large tread blocks, allowing for high-speed stability, traction on dry roads, as well as responsive handling. Four deep circumferential grooves and lateral grooves aims to evacuate water effectively, resulting in enhanced aquaplaning resistance.

Construction and Appearance

The RE050 provides a good steering feel along with adequate feedback to the driver. Befitting its status as a UHP tyre, turn-in is noticeably sharp, and the traction it exhibits when going into corners is impressive. Only upon extreme provocation will the RE050 relinquish its grip on the road surface. High-speed stability is very good and the braking is confidence-inspiring.

In the wet, the RE050 continues to impress with its possibly class-leading performance. The way it holds the line through corners and handles direction changes despite the less-than-ideal conditions is nothing short of remarkable, almost at the same level as when in the dry. Deep puddles of water are dispatched with ease, even at speeds above the national limit. The wet braking performance is of top-notch standard as well.

Dry Performance
Wet Performance

Besides aiding in the wet traction, the soft rubber compound of the RE050 – its UTQG treadwear rating is a poor 140 – helps to contribute to a compliant and comfortable ride. The downside is that the lifespan of the tyre is compromised. Another gripe of the RE050 is a slightly audible tread pattern noise, generated by the large tread blocks used.

The Bridgestone Potenza RE050 is a brilliant example of what a well-rounded tyre should be; good dry performance, superb wet traction and comfortable ride. Just be sure to check the tyre pressure regularly to maximise the life of the tyre. Highly recommended for all drivers.
