Market Watch: Three Sedans With A Sense Of Occasion

These low-slung machines don’t scream for attention - they simply deliver refinement and presence in their own way.

The market today is filled with luxo-EV MPVs, while even mainstream SUVs and crossovers now arrive with plush interiors, plus-sized screens and comfort-focused features once reserved for flagship models.

In Singapore, where buyers tend to prioritise refinement and everyday usability, it’s no surprise these rides continue to dominate conversations.

Still, there’s something uniquely satisfying about a dialled-in sedan that hasn’t faded with time. The lower driving position, calmer way it settles into the road and that understated limo-like feel still supplies the traditional four-door with plenty of appeal.

These three cars here capture that essence particularly well, each bringing its own X-factor that makes driving (and being driven!) feel that bit more special.

2023 Mercedes-Benz S450e L

The Mercedes-Benz S450e L feels especially well-suited to Singapore as it pairs classic S-Class refinement with a plug-in hybrid setup that complements urban driving. A 3.0-litre inline six and electric motor deliver smooth, near-silent progress.

You’ll get more than 400 hp and 650 Nm powering the rear wheels, sure, but the actual appeal lies in the way the long wheelbase and low-slung proportions give it a sense of calm and presence that crossovers still yearn to replicate.

You can glide through Orchard Road and stretch its legs along ECP - it’ll deliver that unmistakable limo-like feel, made even more special by how rare these PHEV S-Classes are compared to the S320s here.

2019 Skoda Superb 2.0 TSI Laurin & Klement

Prefer something that feels premium without screaming for attention? The Skoda Superb Laurin & Klement is one of Singapore’s ultimate luxury sleepers, packing a 280 hp 2.0-litre, AWD and the kind of effortless shove you’d expect wearing a pricier badge within the VW Group.

Even with its liftback tailgate, it still feels every bit like a low-slung executive sedan, with huge rear space and excellent ride comfort. Laurin & Klement trim brings rich leather, upscale detailing and just enough quiet flex to make the big Skoda feel genuinely special. IYKYK!

2011 Audi A6 2.8

Need an executive sedan that still feels analogue in the right ways? The 2011 Audi A6 2.8 hits the sweet spot that newer Audis have gradually moved away from.

Power delivery of the naturally aspirated V6 is gradual without lacking torque, giving it the relaxed richness that four-cylinder A6 variants never quite matched.

Modern Audis have become far more digital and feature-packed, while this 2011 A6 feels more focused on the fundamentals - clean styling and solid build quality with an understated executive character that still draws all the right attention.
