EU Plans For Tougher Emission Laws

With ever increasing concerns of global warming and environmental pollution, the EU is about to announce proposals within the next few days for even stricter CO2 emission laws.

The new legislation, to be announced by EU's environment commissioner, Stavros Dimas, will limit CO2 emissions to an average of 120g/km by 2012. Currently, only a few manufacturers, Fiat for example, have met the voluntary target of achieving an average of 140g/km by 2008. Brussels intends to enforce the regulations because many other car-makers have failed to improve emissions sufficiently to meet the voluntary target.

Such new standards means companies will have to scramble to meet the requirements or face hefty fines. Vehicles expected to be greatly affected by the new laws will mainly include performance cars, SUVs and MPVs. Experts estimate the cost for every new car made to fit the emission limits to be about £3000.
