Mercedes Design Workshop @ NAFA

Mercedes Design Workshop @ NAFA

If you ever wondered who or what comes up with the curves, slants and bulges in a Mercedes-Benz, or the colours and trim fittings in an Avantgarde, then you need to make your way down to a 2 day long public exhibition held on the 17th-18th November.

The Mercedes-Benz “Design with a Heritage” exhibition will be held at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), amidst a once in a lifetime opportunity to mingle and meet with the entire Mercedes-Benz Design team. Professor Peter Pfeiffer, vice-president of design, Daimler AG, visited our sunny little island for Mercedes-Benz’s first ever design workshop to be held in Asia.

Professor Pfeiffer is the man behind the cutting-edge, breakthrough designs of nearly the entire Mercedes-Benz series of cars today.

The above named exhibition and workshop displays some of Mercedes’ key developments and items of the company’s design studios. A good example would be the key component essential to Mercedes-Benz design and heritage – the signature radiator grille that has evolved nine times over the past 105 years.

Amongst the main “beneficiaries” are the students at NAFA and some other local universities, where they will attend a full blown, whole-day workshop that has been specially arranged on the 16th of November. Mercedes hopes to inspire new, fresh blood in the design industry, as well as to raise the standard of design everywhere.

Amongst the many highlights of the event will be a demonstration of clay modelling, where designers demonstrate the process of a design study for a car, made entirely out of clay – proof that tradition plays an important role in today’s world of digital car design.

“Our traditional basic values like quality, tradition safety and value retention are never compromised,” says Professor Pfeiffer. “But there are also new, additional values like passion, innovation and fascination that we continue to build upon.”

Dr Rainer Thiel, CEO of Daimler South East Asia, explains that the design workshop is being held here “in order to give the Mercedes-Benz designers a platform to interact with design students, the media, Mercedes-Benz customers, invited guests and members of the public.”

The exhibition, free of admission fees, will be held at the abovementioned venue, 80 Bencoolen Street, on Saturday the 17th of November between 11am to 6pm. Those who find that a little rushed can also make their way down on Sunday, the 18th of November between 10am and 3pm
