Porsche Cayenne gets a facelift and new engines

Were you a skeptic that didn’t buy into the idea that the Cayenne was a real Porsche, even though its designers tried their best to graft the front of a 911 (and I’m not sure what inspired the rear) to a Volkswagen Touareg but with a couple of powerful V8 engines under the bonnet? Well, banish the thought – Porsche management did the right thing to go into the SUV market, and the Cayenne has become one of Porsche’s best-selling models. It has now been given a stronger identity, one that is no longer so closely tied to the 911 and Boxster models.

Superficially, the facelifted Cayenne looses the “melted egg”-shaped headlamps that it shared with the 911, and in its place, it gets slimmer and broader headlamps that really improve its looks. The under bumper air intakes have also been refreshed, also better looking and also allowing better engine ventilation.

It’s under the bonnet that sees the most dramatic changes, with all three Cayenne models getting direct-injection engines. The base models gets a 3.6-litre V6, up from the 3.2-litre. Power is up by 40 bhp, but with Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) fuel economy is said to be better as well.

The Cayenne S and Turbo get new 4.8-litre V8s – 385bhp and 500Nm of torque for the naturally aspirated S, and a whopping 500bhp and 700Nm of torque for the twin-turbocharged Cayenne Turbo.

Needless to say, this extra power needs reigning in, and all Cayenne models now come equipped with Porsche’s Stability Management System (PSM) and Porsche’s Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC).

Should the new Cayenne Turbo prove to be too irresistible to car-jackers or thieves, it comes standard with Porsche’s Vehicle Tracking System, whereby if a pocket-sized card identifying the owner is not in the car when it moves off, it sets off a GPS tracking system that will track and locate the car. So if you’re thinking of stealing a Porsche, it might be a good idea to kidnap the owner as well!
