When it comes to providing cheap and affordable connecting bus services, one will not think of a private transport company. With a smaller fleet, their profit is limited and they have to resort to higher fees to keep the company going. However, that is exactly what LTA were thinking of when they asked private operators to tender for the operation of 6 short connecting bus services. These 6 services will aid and assist to relieve crowded public bus services during peak periods and provide a relatively comfortable journey for those shuttling between an MRT station and a bus interchange. The six services which will have part of the route replicated are as follows: 265 in Ang Mo Kio, 285 in Clementi, 811 and 812 in Yishun, 903 in Marsiling, and 913 in Woodlands. Our train network was designed in and for an era where Singapore was a lot less populated. The relatively recent influx of foreigners have greatly inflated our population, which in turn, means that out network has to shuttle more to and from their workplaces/schools. This influx may have caused a couple of issues to our network, for more trains are needed to keep the human traffic flow smooth. More trains mean the aged computers at SMRT HQ are struggling to keep up, and hence, breakdown. Plans are already put in place and are currently underway to strip the old signaling system and refit a state-of-the art system, scheduled for completion in 2016. But before then, commuters may have to put up with more frequent delays and breakdowns. SMRT’s latest breakdowns on the EWL and NSL can all be attributed to faulty codes generation by the signaling software, which ended up either dramatically slowing the train down or completely holding the train stationary.Pictures used for illustration purposes only.

As our local fleets of aging buses are slowly replaced with newer wheelchair accessible ones, it makes sense to spread the fleet of new buses out and bring greater convenience to the wheelchair bound. SMRT thinks the same way as us, and have deployed 37 new WAB buses across services 803, 927, 961 and 972 from 2nd March onwards. The 4 services means that SMRT will now have 42 WAB services, more than half the routes the company runs.
