Current standards mandate that regular cars should achieve an average fuel economy figure of 8.6 liters/100 km (27.5 miles per gallon), while light trucks must average 9.8 liters/100 km (24 miles per gallon).

Under the proposed new regulations, these figures could be revised to 5.6 liters/100 km (42 miles per gallon) for cars, and 9.0 liters/100 km (26 miles per gallon) for light trucks.

Another report however, claims that the economy figure for cars will be revised to 6 liters/100 km (39 miles per gallon) and 7.8 liters/100 km (30 miles per gallon) for light trucks.

With the new standards in place, the Obama administration estimates that the average price of a car will increase by US$1,300.
