Volvo's S80 has more in it than you think...

One bright sunny morning in the middle of Woodlands, Volvo decides to demonstrate the advanced capabilities of the S80 that was released last year.

Present at the event was Richard Nilsson, Volvo’s Safety Attribute Manager, and two Volvo Driving Academy instructors from Sweden - Bengt Norberg and Claes Rothstein. Perhaps the most peculiar contraption present that morning was what Volvo calls, ’The World’s Biggest Airbag’.

The airbag aided in Volvo’s demonstration of their Vehicle Collision Warning system. using onboard radar sensors, the S80 detects the distance of the object in front of you, and it sounds a loud beep with red beeping led lights should you not react.

In conjunction with that, the Optimised Hydraulic Brakes (OHB) boosts brake pressure so you brake with less effort if the Collision Warning system is on. As if that wasn’t enough, a Ready Alert Brake program narrows the gap between brake pads and discs.

During our test run, the CW’s radar was absolutely unfazed despite the heavy rain. The Ready Brake Alert function also helped scrub water off the brake discs so you don’t get that slight “softness” when braking in the wet as the initial bite removes water droplets.

Nice, but still, nothing beats safe, responsible driving, and with today’s increasingly complex technologies that help drivers in all sorts of ways, we shouldn’t take safety for granted.
