EDITOR'S PICKS - Cars for Crazy Smart Asian Heartlanders

We all know that buying a car in Singapore is crazy expensive (thanks to the mandatory COE all car owners have to pay) but that doesn’t mean that owning a car is only for the crazy rich. Well, perhaps not everyone will want to purchase a Mercedes-AMG GT and Audi R8 that can cost as much as a HDB flat, it may be smarter to take a look at how we can stretch our dollars with expensive-looking cars at a good price point or just one that does its job.

We simply can’t talk about Crazy Smart Asian Heartlanders without mentioning the world’s best-selling sedan, the Toyota Corolla Altis. Especially for those who want a safe choice, you simply can’t go wrong with an Altis. Heck, you may even be able to drive it for an additional 5 to 10 years after its first COE cycle.

You may not be able to differentiate the facelifted model from its previous one at just one glance, but on closer look, you’ll be able to notice the slight changes in the head and tail light cluster design. A more striking LED assembly at the base of the unit with a redesigned front grille, and a new bumper now takes the front.

More importantly, the refreshed version now comes with a total of seven airbags, including side curtains and driver’s knee protection, for those who stress on safety. Vehicle Stability Control, which manages engine power output and toggle the braking on each individual wheel, is in place to ensure stability should anything go wrong.

The bootspace is at a sufficient 414 litres for grocery-shopping and the occasional large item transportation.

The CVT-I transmission in the facelifted Corolla is an improvement and provides a smooth drive while on the road. The engine this time works better in tandem with the CVT; a vast improvement over how the car performed previously.

All in all, a Crazy Smart Heartlander would love the Corolla as an excellent family workhorse without having to fork out too much.

Most of us can’t be Crazy-Rich to afford all crazy-pricey cars, but we can be Crazy Smart Asian Heartlanders who purchase cars that are best-suited to our needs and pockets!
