Amid the bright lights of the event area, the all-new 2017 Land Rover Discovery is launched. The historically important SUV is full-sized with three rows of seats, the new seven-seater promises unbeatable capacity and versatility.
The all-new Discovery design was first hinted with the Discovery Vision Concept, revealed at the New York Auto Show in 2014. Its dynamic design is intended to resonate with customers at an emotional level, and is a radical departure in design from the brand’s most versatile SUV, while remaining instantly recognisable, as a Land Rover.
The V6 turbocharged diesel delivers a generous 600Nm of torque from a low 1,750rpm, giving the Discovery plenty of muscle to tackle even the hardest of terrains. With the clever utilisation of aluminium for its monocoque chassis, the new Discovery is almost half-a-tonne (480kg) lighter than the previous car, delivering improved fuel consumption figures, and also increasing the nimbleness of the full-sized SUV.
Better packaging also means that the new SUV is able to accommodate seven full-sized adults, and rear passengers will be glad to know that instead of a 5+2 configuration, the new Discovery is a full seven-seater. Premium interior combines leading design with durable, high-quality materials. With up to 2,500 litres of available cargo room, the Discovery makes this better with their new remote Intelligent Seat Fold Technology, and includes a Powered Inner Tailgate for added versatility. The tailgate has been designed to replicate the function of the split tail unit in the previous car, and is able to withstand up to 300kg of load. For a car dedicated to providing utility together with comfort, there are also plenty of stowage areas within the car, including one in the centre console, able to hold up to four iPads.
The improved wading capabilities allows the new Discovery wade to depths of up to 900mm, an increase of 200mm. Land Rover’s Terrain Response 2 finds its way into the new Discovery (First Edition), delivering a full suite of tools, and together with the Discovery’s excellent wheel articulation and an air sprung suspension to aid even the most inexperienced of drivers to tackle what nature might throw at them.
The new Discovery is now on show at Marina @ Keppel Bay till 27 August, Sunday.
