BYD Atto 1 Review: Small Car With A Big Personality

Don't let its compact dimensions fool you - BYD's Atto 1 proves that good things really do come in small packages.

My first encounter with the BYD Atto 1 wasn't in Singapore. It was in Jakarta, a city I frequent, where traffic congestion is practically a national pastime and compact cars make an awful lot of sense.

Known there as the BYD Atto 1 too, this cheerful little hatchback immediately caught my attention. Perhaps it was the playful styling, the compact proportions or simply how refreshing it looked among the endless sea of SUVs. Whatever it was, I found myself looking twice whenever one passed by.

And when finished in a loud, cheerful colour like this, it becomes even harder to ignore…

There's something genuinely likeable about its appearance: The short overhangs, rounded styling and friendly face give it a youthful character without looking excessively cute. It's a small car that doesn't seem desperate to prove anything.

At just 3,990 mm long and 1,720 mm wide, the Atto 1 is perfectly proportioned for Singapore. Whether navigating tight multi-storey carparks, squeezing into HDB parking lots or negotiating crowded neighbourhood streets, its dimensions are an immediate advantage.

But here's where things get interesting - what looks compact outside is surprisingly generous inside.

The Inside Story

Step inside and the Atto 1 challenges the assumption that “small cars must come with equally small interiors”. Thanks to its 2,500 mm wheelbase and clever packaging, cabin space is better than its exterior dimensions suggest.

Up front, there's sufficient room for the driver and passenger, with a modern dashboard layout that feels appropriately contemporary rather than unnecessarily complicated.

The real surprise, however, comes when you climb into the back: Two adults can sit comfortably in the rear without feeling they've been punished for not calling shotgun. Legroom is respectable, while the relatively tall roofline provides useful headroom.

Of course, three adults across the rear bench would be considerably less comfortable, particularly over longer journeys. But for couples, young professionals or small families, the Atto 1 offers more than enough everyday practicality.

Then there's the 308-litre boot. It might not sound particularly impressive on paper, but it's perfectly usable - a gym bag, badminton rackets, basketball, a change of clothes and other sporting essentials can be accommodated without much fuss.

For someone heading straight from the office to the gym, football pitch or badminton court, this is exactly the sort of practicality that matters. After all, not everyone needs an SUV capable of transporting half of IKEA home every weekend.

Technically Speaking

The Atto 1 uses a single electric motor driving the front wheels, producing 65 kW (87 bhp) and 175 Nm of torque.

A 0-100 km/h time of 12.1 seconds isn't going to trouble anyone at a traffic-light grand prix, but that's hardly the point. What matters more is the immediate response of the electric motor, particularly at the lower speeds encountered in everyday driving.

The Atto 1's modest output is well suited to its intended purpose; it isn't trying to be a hot hatch, and neither should anyone expect it to behave like one.

Its 43.2 kWh BYD Blade Battery delivers a claimed driving range of 322 km, with official energy consumption rated at 6.4 km/kWh. For Singapore's relatively short daily commutes, that's entirely workable; even the occasional trip across the Causeway to Johor Bahru is well within its capabilities, provided charging is planned sensibly.

Charging is supported at up to 11 kW AC and 85 kW DC, making it practical for owners with access to regular charging facilities. More importantly, its Category A COE eligibility makes it relevant to first-time EV buyers looking for a sensible entry point into electric motoring.

Driving It

On the road, the Atto 1's greatest strength is how easy it is to drive.

Its compact footprint makes manoeuvring effortless, while the light steering is particularly welcome when negotiating tight corners, narrow carparks and congested streets.

There's a reassuring predictability to its handling. The front-wheel-drive layout, MacPherson strut front suspension and torsion-beam rear arrangement are hardly exotic, but they provide a sensible foundation for everyday motoring.

Around corners, the Atto 1 feels tidy and manageable. Body movements are noticeable when driven enthusiastically, but nothing feels particularly unsettling. The steering could communicate more, although expecting sports-car levels of feedback from an urban runabout would be rather… unreasonable.

Ride comfort is generally agreeable, with the suspension doing a respectable job of absorbing everyday road imperfections. However, sharper bumps can occasionally remind occupants that this is a relatively small, affordable hatchback.

On expressways, its 1,370 kg kerb weight and modest power output become more apparent, particularly when accelerating at higher speeds. Overtaking requires a little more planning, especially with passengers aboard.

Nevertheless, it feels sufficiently composed for Singapore's expressways and occasional Malaysian highway journeys. It’s true, the Atto 1 isn't particularly exciting to drive; but its friendly, unintimidating character is precisely what makes it appealing.

In A Nutshell

At a sub-$180k listed price, the Atto 1 isn't exactly cheap in absolute terms. But then again, what new car in Singapore is?

What BYD has delivered is a thoughtfully packaged electric hatchback that understands its target audience - it's compact enough for urban living, spacious enough for four adults, practical enough for an active lifestyle and capable of the occasional cross-border adventure.

The car’s performance won't set pulses racing, and keen drivers might wish for sharper steering and greater enthusiasm through corners. But as a first car for young professionals, couples or urban dwellers who value convenience over outright performance, the Atto 1 makes a compelling case.

Sometimes, the smartest car isn't the biggest, fastest or most expensive - it's simply the one that fits your life.
